So, I've been a big supporter of the bus system in my city. Graduated, good job, but wanting to pay off my student debt as fast as possible, going another year or two without a car seemed like a good idea. And, what's more, not having a car meant I was part of a NEW generation of people who have the higher ideals of environment and globalism in mind instead of the all-encompassing lust for convenience that a personal vehicle provides. All-in-all, minus the inconvenience of periodically having to carry groceries back home on the bus, I loved my bus-trekking lifestyle.
And then, OH NO!! My workplace switched offices to a location 15 minutes outside of the city. Carpool is still an option, but it's unfair always expecting a ride from someone else. And the freedom to go to dentist appointments, etc., is totally taken away when you're completely depending on someone else's wheels, with no public transportation.
So...I re-budgeted and found myself with a new beauty two days ago. My boss was down in Brazil on a business trip when I finally picked it up. He messaged me the next day to tell me congratulations. And then... "Welcome to the club" "You aren't carbon neutral anymore" "You're now part of the problem".
Wow. Yup. My idealism suddenly has no teeth because now I'm a car owner. Whew! I don't like it at all. Sure, convenience is cool. But now I'm dependent on those fossil fuels that I'm against for EXTREMELY convenient and costly transportation. I'd rather be spending that money in other ways...but for now, I have to get to work. One great thing: I'll be car pooling as much as possible.
But yes, I have a new baby. And as much as I complain, she puts a smile on my face whenever I see her gleaming in the sunshine.
